Long ago, God created the world. He scattered stars through the universe and bid the sun to shine. He carved out oceans with His mighty hands. He created thousands of different species of animals with just the sound of His voice. He formed human beings out of dust and a bone.
Throughout history, He has proven His greatness. He created a great flood that destroyed the earth. He parted the Red Sea. He caused city walls to fall. He gave 300 men the ability to defeat an army of 120,000 and young boy the strength to bring down a towering giant of a man.
But the amazing thing about God is that through all of those magnificent events, He had people on His mind.

He created that first man and woman with the intention of a close, intimate relationship with them. He created that world for them to have a wonderful place to live.
Even in flooding the earth, He saved a faithful man named Noah and his family, taking care of their every need.
In parting the Red Sea, He was saving His people from captivity under the leadership of a deficient man named Moses.
In the midst of the walls falling, a woman of questionable character named Rahab was saved and used by God.
He chose an insignificant man named Gideon to take that army of 300 into battle.
David was the young man he used to defeat Goliath, become king, change the world.
You see, God is great.
But He is also good.
In the middle of holding the universe together, He takes the time to hold us when we are distressed.
While he is controlling the weather and other natural phenomena, He also cares enough to control all the events that happen in our day.
He knows how many drops are in the ocean and how many grains of sand are beside it. But he also knows the number of hairs on your head and sees every tear that falls from your eyes.
He is not too busy to care about us.
He is not too distant to be close by.
God is not too great to also be good.
We can read in Scripture about both aspects of our God.
A powerful God…
“He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.” – Psalm 147:4-5
“It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.” – Jeremiah 10:12-13
A personal God…
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” – Zephaniah 3:17
He spoke the world into existence. But He also speaks words of love to us.
He holds the stars in place. And He holds us when we are hurting.
God is great.
God is good.
